Office 365 Groups
Groups Generated during the INKY install process
Groups: | Type: |
---|---|
IPW-Dynamic-All | Dynamic Distribution List |
IPW-Group | Mail-Enabled Security Group |
IPW-Group Exclude | Mail-Enabled Security Group |
IPW-Group-Silent | Mail-Enabled Security Group |
IPW-Group
Users or groups within the IPW-Group will have their mail bannered and processed by INKY. All users and group types can be added to the IPW-Group in the Exchange Admin Center except for Microsoft 365 groups (see the troubleshooting below).
*In the message headers the tag X-IPW-GROUPMEMBER: TRUE/FALSE will indicate whether the recipient is within the IPW-Group or not.
IPW-Dynamic-All
This group is designed to automatically nest end-users and mail-enabled security groups within the IPW-Group. By utilizing the IPW-Dynamic-All group, mail administrators won’t need to manually add users or groups to the IPW-Group.
Exchange/Office 365 Hybrid Customers: If Azure AD connect is properly configured, the IPW-Dynamic-All group will include on-prem users. On-prem users must also have an active directory account that is not disabled. If an account must stay disabled, you will need to manually add that user to the IPW-Group.
*Note: You will need to manually add the IPW-Dynamic-All group to the IPW-Group in the Exchange Admin Center. This is not added during the installation process.
IPW-Group-Exclude
Users or groups added to this group will be excluded for processing by INKY and will not see a banner.
For example, Company A wants to apply INKY to all employees except for the sales department. In this scenario, it would be best to add an “All Users” distribution list to the IPW-Group or utilize the IPW-Dynamic-All group. Company A can then add a distribution list (or individual members) of the sales department to the IPW-Group-Exclude.
IPW-Group-Silent
Any users or groups within the IPW-Group-Silent will have their mail processed by INKY but will not see any type of banner. Messages in the INKY dashboard will show an analysis of the message and the banner that would have been applied if the user was in the IPW-Group.
*In the message headers the tag “X-Inky-OU: Silent” indicates the recipient is within the IPW-Group-Silent.
Troubleshooting
Q. Messages to a Microsoft 365 group are not seeing banners applied
Microsoft 365 groups operate slightly different than traditional distribution lists and mail-enabled security groups. By default, if an end-user is looking at messages in the group mailbox in Outlook they will not see an INKY banner. Users will see banners applied in their personal inbox when the “Subscribe new members” checkbox is enabled in the group.
If you wish to have banners applied in the group inbox itself, you will need to run the PowerShell command below to add the Microsoft 365 group to the IPW-Group. Microsoft 365 groups cannot be manually added to the IPW-Group in the graphical user interface of the Exchange Admin Center.
Add-DistributionGroupMember -Identity "ipw-group" -Member <Microsoft 365 Group>
